Like most major cities Amsterdam is made up of a collection of neighbourhoods, each one with its own personality and selling points. There’s the 9-Straatjes, a small area in the centre that boasts lots of narrow streets lined with quirky shops and cafes. The Centrum is in a similar area and is perhaps the busiest spot in the city. It has a plethora of museums, lively bars, and top-notch shops that are a big hit with tourists and locals. Then there’s De Pijp, which is similar to the 9-Straatjes in appearance but has a lot fewer tourists. This is where you’ll find lots of the markets and local, independent stores. Jordaan is one of the best-loved neighbourhoods in the city, and is home to a lot of young creatives, up-and-coming bars, and street art. NDSM-Werf is similar to Jordaan in that it is hugely creative and is called home by a number of artists, musicians, and students. Then there’s Oud-Zuid, the richer part of the city that caters to expensive tastes and luxury desires.
“The room was very modern and clean and the hotel is located in a safe and quiet part of Amsterdam, not too far from the city centre and there is a tram stop only around 100m away. We also liked that we could rent bikes here and the cafe downstairs was great. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. The room looked exactly as it did advertised.”
“It is very nice hotel with young management. All what you need is available. Near Amsterdam city. 5 star restaurant but price is high. Lovely nice life place. Staff are very helpful and kind. Very modern hotel in style. Very secure system.”

We stayed near the old town. Within walking distance of the Anne Frank house and the hop on hop off boat. This was a great way to see the city. A 24 hour ticket. It takes you to all the important sights. On the streets be very careful of the bicycles. The Rijksmuseum was well worth a visit. And we went to the Red Light District which was interesting.

Buy tulip bulbs and different cheeses. Get a daily pass from the machines on the bus stops and travel freely for an entire day for about €8. Watch out for bicycle paths as there are plenty of bicycles and it does take some getting used to.
