More adventurous visitors might be intrigued by the city’s famous red light district, in the old town area, with its window displays and sex shops. Despite initial reservations some may have, the area has a strong police presence and is populated by a range of people, from hen parties to tourists, seeking amusement and titillation more than anything else.
“The staff were welcoming, going out of their way to make you feel at home. The place had all the facilities we needed, it was super comfortable in the rooms and very clean. I will return here in future”

Kimpton De Witt Hotel provides a luxurious, light-hearted haven where the very best of this iconic city intersects. The hotel is inspired by Dutch heritage but with a tailored twist and Kimpton’s signature wit and whimsy. A living wall and Delft-inspired tile welcomes guests into an inviting living room and a lush interior open-air courtyard, complete with swings. The restaurant stars local brews and elevated fare, while the beignet and coffee window satisfies late night and early morning cravings. Every afternoon the hotel hosts a wine reception for all hotel guests. Make sure you visit the historic bar where curated cocktails and a social ambiance prevail.
This is an amazing city. I was here about 10 years ago and it has really been cleaned up and more tourist frienldy. It wouldn’t really be somewhere i would bring kids. Very easy city to navigate around. Food can be hit or miss. Coffee shops vary hugely from commercial ones to more local ones. Loads of shopping but main shopping street has nearly all the same shops as every other European city. Night life is amazing. Red light district not as sleezy as you would think. Everyone needs to go on at least one canal cruise. Use places like tours and tickets to buy tickets for tours they are much cheaper. Amsterdam has something for everyone.
“It’s perfect location near tram stop that takes you to the city centre. Hotel rents bicycles as well. There is a bar downstairs and you can buy some snacks water and beverages by the reception. But we find Lidl very near by which was convenient. We could borrow eu adapter for deposit of €10. Room had kettle and tea provided, also lovely map of Amsterdam that we had used a lot.”
Amsterdam is a cosy city, with a flurry of winding streets, tall, narrow houses, and cute bridges popping up over the array of canals. Strolling through the markets, past the design-led cafes, and the boutique shops is like stepping back in time to a world where cobbled streets ruled and friendly faces were around every corner. There’s a wealth of art and design throughout the city too, with a number of galleries, studios, and museums showcasing the creative atmosphere of Amsterdam. Fit in with the locals by hiring a bike and whizzing alongside trams, over humped bridges, and into the labyrinth of cool, quirky streets. And, afterwards, soak up the intimate ambiance with one of our apartments in Amsterdam, where you can stay in a budget flat or boutique holiday rental in the centre of all the action.

  2. The Anne Frank House is where the young Jewish girl, Anne Frank, and her family hid from the Nazis during the war and where she also wrote her famous diary of the ordeal. Today, the house is a museum dedicated to her memory with the original diary, photographs and personal possessions on display.

We didn’t get a chance to explore really as this was an unexpected stop over after a connecting flight to another country was missed. An early flight the following morning prevented any chance to look around.

Like most major cities Amsterdam is made up of a collection of neighbourhoods, each one with its own personality and selling points. There’s the 9-Straatjes, a small area in the centre that boasts lots of narrow streets lined with quirky shops and cafes. The Centrum is in a similar area and is perhaps the busiest spot in the city. It has a plethora of museums, lively bars, and top-notch shops that are a big hit with tourists and locals. Then there’s De Pijp, which is similar to the 9-Straatjes in appearance but has a lot fewer tourists. This is where you’ll find lots of the markets and local, independent stores. Jordaan is one of the best-loved neighbourhoods in the city, and is home to a lot of young creatives, up-and-coming bars, and street art. NDSM-Werf is similar to Jordaan in that it is hugely creative and is called home by a number of artists, musicians, and students. Then there’s Oud-Zuid, the richer part of the city that caters to expensive tastes and luxury desires.

  3. Hotel Iris is in a typical Amsterdam building, just a 15 minute walk from Amsterdam’s bustling De Pijp district. Its rooms come with free Wi-Fi. Bike rentals and luggage storage are available and breakfast is served daily. Oosteinde tram stop is a 3 minute walk away, with services to the Rijksmuseum and lively Leidse Square. Dam Square and Amsterdam Central Station are a short ride on tram 16, which stops at the Stadshouderskade, a 5 minute walk from the hotel. The simply furnished rooms at Hotel Iris come with a TV. Each has a private bathroom.
Situated in one of the oldest streets, in the famous old town centre, Hotel Internationaal is only 20 minutes by train from the airport and a 2 minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station. The hotel has a friendly Dutch pub, which was founded in 1928 for the sailors coming back from their long sea journeys. Until today, the style of the interior has remained authentic, with a old harpoon hanging above the bar and a lot of other antiques reminding us of the “Golden age”.

To get a feel for how the locals shop, head to Albert Cuypmarkt, Amsterdam’s oldest and busiest market. Here, you can find a wide array of cheap goods and tasty snacks, including stroopwafels, doughnuts, and egg rolls. Tulips can be bought from Bloemenmarkt, by the Singel, and Delftware, the famous blue and white Dutch pottery, can be bought at many specialist shops in the city, such as Jorrit Heinen Royal Gifts and Collectables in the Munt Tower.
